Dead, But Not Quite

Whenever a death occurs in South Carolina

(1) as a result of violence; (2) as a result of apparent suicide; (3) when in apparent good health; (4) when unattended by a physician; (5) in any suspicious or unusual manner; (6) while an inmate of a penal or correctional institution; or (7) as a result of stillbirth when unattended by a physician;

the county coroner or medical examiner must be notified immediately, and the coroner or medical examiner

must make an immediate inquiry into the cause and manner of death

Section 17-5-350 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976 (as amended).

To my knowledge, the same holds true for virtually every state: if a death occurs due to an accident, the coroner or medical examiner is called to the scene to investigate.

What happened?
